Herding Breeds 101

Herding Breeds 101

Smart, driven, and always on the move — herding breeds were built to work alongside humans and control livestock through movement, eye contact, and body language.

These dogs aren’t just fast thinkers — they’re problem solvers with intense focus and endless energy.

Common Herding Breeds:

  • Border Collie

  • Australian Shepherd

  • German Shepherd

  • Belgian Malinois

  • Corgi (Pembroke & Cardigan)

  • Shetland Sheepdog

  • Blue & Red Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog)

Typical Traits:

  • Extremely intelligent and trainable

  • Thrive with mental and physical stimulation

  • Strong herding instinct (may nip, chase, or “round up” kids or pets)

  • Form deep bonds with their handlers

  • Do best with consistent training and jobs to do

Training Tip:
Herding dogs need purpose — whether it’s agility, obedience, hiking, or learning new tricks, keeping their mind busy prevents boredom and reactivity.

Got a herding breed? Give them a “job,” and they’ll give you 110%.
